As reported by AP, over 7.2 million television viewers in the USA watched , the opening game of the 2022 World Cup, Ecuador’s 2-0 win over hosts Qatar, on Sunday.
The English language version of US TV network Fox’s broadcast was watched by over 3.2 million people while NBC’s Spanish language presentation was viewed by a further 4.0 million American-based viewers.
That equals a huge 88% rise in viewing figures for Fox on their broadcast of the 2018 World Cup’s opening game in Russia, as the hosts thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-0. Both matches started at 11am eastern time, but the 2018 game took place on a Thursday morning, likely affecting the figures.
Meanwhile, NBC’s Telemundo saw a 164% rise for Eucador’s win on Sunday, up from 1.54 million viewers for the 2018 opener.
