Speaking with reporters after the USA men’s national team were knocked out of the World Cup in Qatar via a 3-1 last-16 loss to the Netherlands, US and Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie remained positive on the team’s future.
The 24-year-old explained: “This tournament has really restored a lot of belief, restored a lot of respect to US Soccer and soccer in our country. I think we’ve shown that we can be giants eventually. We may not be there yet, but I think we’re definitely on our way.” McKennie continued, saying that the US squad set out to “change the way the world views American soccer and I think we accomplished a piece of that in this World Cup.”
The second youngest team at the tournament, the US squad will be buoyed by their displays having not lost in three group games and matched England in their toughest encounter, drawing 0-0.
