Vinícius hires lawyers to break Nike contract after being given old boots to wear

As reported by O Globo, Brazil forward Vinícius Júnior is trying to terminate his contract with his boot sponsor Nike, and has directed his lawyers to find a way out of his current deal after being given old boots to wear.

The Real Madrid attacker has been wearing Nike boots and clothing during the World Cup in Qatar but has hired an international law firm to break his agreement with the American sportswear supplier. Vinícius’s current deal with Nike runs to 2028 but the 22-year-old has alleged that the brand have treated him unfairly after he was asked to wear boots of an older design (Mercurials from a previous collection) of late, while also being excluded from some of the company’s advertising events.

Legal proceedings were undertaken before the World Cup in the first part of 2022 after the player used the older boots in the latter stages of last season’s Champions League. Nike is one of 12 personal sponsorships the Brazilian forward enjoys alongside deals with Pepsi, EA Sports and Vivo, amongst others.
