Uruguay coach: “We need to take risks and be the brave team we were before.”

Speaking after his team’s 2-0 loss to Portugal, Uruguay coach Diego Alonso remained bullish on his team’s chances of making the last 16 in Qatar but said his players needed to be “bold” in their final group game with Ghana. Alonso explained:

“I’m convinced by and have great confidence in our players. It will be tough but we are going to go all out to qualify. We never stopped attacking, but Portugal also played their game. The team has to let go and play as they did in the second half. We have to force ourselves to play more, take risks and be the brave team we were in the qualifiers.”

Uruguay now need to beat Ghana to have any chance of making it out of Group H while also hoping that South Korea don’t beat Portugal in the other game. Uruguay will also need to better Korea’s goal difference to make the second round.
