Tottenham ‘getting closer’ to a deal for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson

As per Fabrizio Romano, negotiations between Tottenham and Nottingham Forest for Brennan Johnson are advancing, and it is understood a deal is now ‘getting closer.’

Although no agreement is currently in place, contacts between the two sides are ongoing to attempt to complete the deal later today, whilst Johnson himself has also given the ‘green light’ to the move.

The exact fee that the Midlands side will require for the player is not known, however it is expected to be upwards of the £43m bid that Brentford saw rejected by Forest earlier this week. Since this offer, Thomas Frank’s side have subsequently backed out of a move for the versatile forward, leaving Spurs as the frontrunners for his signature, if he were to depart the City Ground.

Having spent the 2020/21 season on loan at League one side Lincoln City, Johnson had his breakout Championship campaign the following year, scoring 16 goals and gaining 10 assists in 44 starts, as Forest won promotion to the Premier League. Whilst in his debut season in the top flight last year, the 22-year-old predominantly played on the right side of attack under Steve Cooper, standing out with his electric speed and threat on the counter-attack- where his eight goals and three assists in 38 games were vital in helping his boyhood side narrowly secure survival.

Furthermore, as The Lilywhites look to fill in the void left by club-record goal scorer Harry Kane, the Wales international will be an exciting option capable of playing across the frontline in Ange Postecoglou’s side, however will likely need time to adapt, as he transitions from a Forest side which averaged the lowest possession in the league last year, to a high-pressing, front-footed Spurs side, looking to dominate games with the majority share of the ball this season.

If the move were to be completed, it would see Johnson join a fresh and exciting squad at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, who have already started the new season well under their new Australian head coach, going unbeaten in their first three Premier League games.

With the transfer deadline coming later this evening at 11pm, The North London club will face a race against time to secure their sixth new signing of the summer, as they also prepare for next match this Saturday, when they will face Vincent Kompany’s Burnley away at Turf Moor.
