Ted Lasso leaves USA players messages of support on giant billboards ahead of World Cup

As reported by ESPN, fictional football-based sitcom coach Ted Lasso, an NFL coach thrown in to manager a Premier League team despite no knowledge of the sport, has left messages of support and encouragement for the USA national team’s players ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

The messages from Lasso, who is played by former Saturday Night Live star Jason Sudeikis, have been displayed on large billboards in each member of the US squad’s home towns. The messages comically congratulate each player and coach on making the squad. One aimed at coach Gregg Berhalter, pokes fun at the extra ‘G’ in his first name, saying: “You must have earned that extra G by being so dogggone ggood at soccer!”

Another message for Seattle Sounders’ Jordan Morris jokes: “I was blown away by your sheer speed and talent. I’m sure you know all about bein’ blown away being from Seattle.” Lasso also refers to Celta Vigo midfielder Luca de la Torre as “Luca de la Torrific.”
