Morocco’s win over Spain on penalty shoot-outs was a great moment for the country, but it may not have been possible without Sofyan Amrabat’s incredible showing in midfield.
Morocco were very narrow in midfield and never allowed Spain any space between the lines, meaning that La Roja could never find tight spaces to use their technical players. Amrabat’s ability to cover ground, win duels and win the ball back was crucial in this.
As per Sofascore, the Fiorentina man won seven ground duels and he had a 100 percent accuracy in that regard. He also won four tackles and had a 100 percent accuracy even for that, making one interception for Morocco.
The 26-year-old was important in helping Morocco break down Spain’s midfield lines and he often played through the press very effectively, showing that he is more than just a pure ball-winner.
In general, Amrabat has had an excellent tournament and today was probably his best performance.
