Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu is ready to take revenge on Uruguay for their famous handball incident in the 2010 World Cup.
Ghana and Uruguay faced each other in the quarter finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The Black Stars were about to take the lead, but Luis Suárez prevented that, blocking the ball on the line with his hands. He received a straight red card and the ball was put on the penalty spot. However, Asamoah Gyan missed and Uruguay went on to beat Ghana on penalty’s.
Now, the two nations face off again in the group stages in Qatar. Someone who’s definitely ready for the tie is Southampton’s Salisu. “I think people are waiting for that match because they are going for revenge”, he was quoted saying by El Gráfico. “I’m also waiting for that match. I have to fight for my country. I’m part of the revenge.”
Apart from the way Ghana was knocked out in 2010, Salisu has good feelings about that World Cup. “When we played Uruguay then, Ghana was the best African team and the one that went the furthest. Having that in my memory inspires me,” Salisu, who scored in a friendly against Switzerland on Thursday (2-0), said.
Ghana have been placed in a though group with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.
Salisu: “Every game is tough, so we need to be united as a group and put everything in each other so that our country is proud.”
