Portugal coach Fernando Santos has explained, following the 2-0 win over Uruguay last night, that he is keen to avoid Brazil in the last 16 of the World Cup in Qatar by winning Group H. Santos said:
“If we both stay in first place [in our groups] it’s better, but, if we had to face each other, it would be a game between two great teams. But our wish, and Brazil’s, is that we meet later on. We want to be at the top of the group and not just because of Brazil.”
Portugal are now sure of a place in the last 16 and will win Group H, and likely avoid Brazil who are now very likely to win Group G, should they draw their final group game with South Korea on Friday.
