Papu Gómez: “We’re Argentina, we always have to suffer.”

Speaking after his team’s narrow 2-1 last-16 win over Australia in Qatar, Sevilla and Argentine midfielder Papu Gómez highlighted his team’s ability to dig in during crucial moments against a competitive Socceroo team. The 34-year-old explained:

“After the second goal we had several situations to score again but it didn’t happen, the match didn’t end calmly. That couldn’t happen because of Australia’s reaction, they found a goal and ended up making us suffer. But we’re Argentina, we always have to suffer. Our team is good, strong and is still growing – the best thing is that someone who starts does well and those who have to come on from the substitutes bench are doing well too, sometimes better than those they replaced.”

Argentina now France the Netherlands in the last eight, a repeat of the famous game at the same stage in Marseille during the 1998 World Cup, which was capped by Dennis Bergkamp’s famous late winner.
