Mat Ryan on error: “Maybe I could’ve milked a foul or put my foot through it.”

Speaking after Australia’s narrow 2-1 loss to Argentina in the last 16, Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan discussed his error in possession that resulted in Argentina’s second goal. Ryan was ambushed by Julián Álvarez and Rodrigo De Paul who stole the ball before Álvarez rolled it home. On the incident, the 30-year-old said:

“They played it back to me and I took a touch and two of them were on me straight away. I tried to adjust as quickly as I could and copped a little bump there and maybe I could have tried and milked a foul there in hindsight or, in hindsight, put my foot through it. The modern way of playing, playing out of the back, you’ve still got to find the right balance of doing that and knowing when to get yourself out of danger… I’ll analyse it and can only learn from it. We learn from our hardships in life and that’s definitely one for me. It hurts a lot but I won’t let it get the better of me or define me and I’ll come back stronger for it.”
