Manchester United have confirmed Anthony Martial has successfully completed surgery to “address a groin complaint”, and the striker will now be out for around 10 weeks as he undergoes rehabilitation.
The injury will be a significant blow for Martial, who recently declared his intention to stay at The Red Devils and fight for a place in Erik ten Hag’s side until the end of his contract, which is set to expire this summer.
Additionally, whilst United do hold an option to activate a one-year extension on the forwards’ deal, The Athletic report that they are not expected to do so, therefore leaving the Frenchman able to leave on a free transfer from July 1st.
Meanwhile, The 28-year-old’s latest absence marks another setback in what has been a tough few years for him in Manchester. Despite signing a five-year deal with the Old Trafford club in 2019, and registering 23 goals in all competitions in the 2019-20 season, the former Monaco man has made just 28 starts in all competitions since the beginning of 2021-22 season and not scored more than 10 goals in a season since that 23-goal campaign; as struggles with form and a myriad of injuries has left him unfavoured by his various head coaches, including Ten Hag.
As such, Martial will be looking to re-find form upon his return to fitness, as he hopes to revitalize his career with a new move this summer and reach the potential that saw him make a €60m move to United as an 19-year-old in September 2015.
