Manchester United reject West Ham’s £20m bid for Harry Maguire

As per David Ornstein of The Athletic, West Ham have had a £20m bid rejected by Manchester United for Harry Maguire.

It is understood that West Ham head coach David Moyes is keen on bringing the England international in, however it is doubtful the London side will continue to push for a deal, due to uncertainty over his eagerness to depart United, as well as his significant salary.

Since signing for The Red Devils for £80m from Leicester in 2019, the 30-year-old has had a tumultuous spell in Manchester. Despite missing just four Premier League matches in both the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons combined, Maguire- who was appointed as club captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjær- in January 2020, has fallen out of favour under Erik ten Hag; making just eight League starts last year and being stripped of his captaincy by the Dutchman this summer, with Portuguese talisman Bruno Fernandes taking the armband instead.

On a statement posted on his social media, the centre-back explained he was “extremely dissapointed” with the decision, but reiterated his commitment to stay and fight for his place at the club, stating: “I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.”

However, with The Old Trafford club looking to bring in Danish striker Rasmus Højlund from Atalanta, alongside the new signings of Mason Mount and André Onana, they are seeking to offload some of their squad this summer, with Maguire being one of the names that has been most frequently linked with a departure.

As for West Ham, this bid marks another attempted step to rebuild their squad this summer, as they look to reinvest the £105m that was received for the sale of captain Declan Rice to Arsenal. The Hammers have already seen a £45m bid knocked back for Fulham’s João Palhinha , whilst they are soon expected to complete the signing of talented young winger Carlos Borges from Manchester City.
