As reported by Olé, PSG and Argentina forward Lionel Messi is the only member of the Argentina squad at the World Cup in Qatar to have his own room.
Traditionally, teams at tournaments or those travelling for away games pair off amongst themselves to bunk together in their hotels. Messi, however, has his own room in Argentina’s digs at the University of Qatar in Doha.
Messi traditionally shared his room with former Barcelona and Manchester City striker Sergio Agüero. However, since Agüero was forced to retire due to the discovery of a heart condition, Messi has yet to find a new roommate and this will be his first World Cup without one. Agüero had replaced Messi’s former room mate Juan Sebastian Veron after the pair, also close friends, shared a room in 2010.
Nevertheless, Messi’s friends within the squad remain nearby. Close friends Juventus pair Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes are opposite, for example. Messi, however, may prefer it this way having politely asked some celebrating players to leave his room to allow him to sleep on his birthday during the Copa América, which Argentina won in Brazil last year.
