Lionel Messi has edged close to a historic record following Argentina’s 2-0 win over Mexico in the FIFA World Cup.
When Argentina were struggling to get a goal in a must-win game, Messi came up with a spectacular goal from distance to beat Guillermo Ochoa. Apart from scoring the goal, the PSG man was also vital in dictating play and finding the right passes between the lines.
As per Opta though, it is the goal from Messi that has brought him closer to a record for Argentina. It was Messi’s eighth goal in World Cup competition and he has now equalled Diego Maradona in that regard.
Only Fiorentina legend Gabriel Batistuta has scored more World Cup goals for Argentina – 10, but Messi may have enough games left in the current edition to break that record. Considering how he performed today, he may need only one more game to go past the legendary Batigol.
