Leicester City confirm departures of seven senior players

Seven senior players have been confirmed to be departing Leicester City this June, following the expiration of each of their contracts.

The two most notable departures are Youri Tielemans, and Çağlar Söyüncü, who, as per Transfermarkt, hold market values of €30m and €15m respectively. The latter of which is expected to sign for Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid, whilst Belgian international Tielemans is yet to settle on his future, but has many proposals from top European clubs – including recent Europa Conference League qualifiers Aston Villa, as The Athletic’s Gregg Evans reported soon after the midfielders departure was confirmed.

Daniel Amartey, Nampalys Mendy, Ryan Bertrand and Ayoze Pérez will also leave, as will Brazilian winger Tetê, who joined on a short-term loan deal in January and will return to parent side Shakhtar Donetsk on 1 July.

The seven players cost the Midlans club just over £100m combined on transfer fees, the earliest signing being Ghanian Amartey, who joined in January 2016 during their title winning campaign.

Captain Jonny Evans and academy graduate Hamza Choudury were also set to see their contracts expire this month, however it looks as though both will stay on at the King Power next season, with Evans currently in discussions over a new contract, whilst a clause in Choudhury’s contract to keep him on until 2024 has been triggered, following his return from a year-long spell at Watford.

As reported by Rob Tanner of The Athletic, the seven departures are just the beginning of what is set to be a significant summer rebuild for the former Premier League champions, with the appointment of a permanent manager still yet to be confirmed and star players James Maddison and Harvey Barnes expected to be moved.

Ensuring swift decisions are made on each of those fronts in the coming weeks will be key for The Foxes, as they look to return to the top flight immediately following their relegation to the EFL Championship last season.
