Lautaro Martínez: “We have two finals to come.”

As quoted by La Nacion, speaking after his Argentina side’s shock 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia at the World Cup in Qatar today, Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martínez explained that he and his teammates now needed good results from “two finals” if they wanted to make the last 16. Martínez said:

“We lost the game because of our mistakes. In the first half we wanted to score more than one goal but we couldn’t. Now we have to rest and think about the games to come – they are two finals. Defeat hurts a lot, we wanted to start with a win but we have to sit down, assess, rest, train and think about the two games that follow.”

Martínez was party to three Argentina goals that ruled out for offside in a dominant first half for his side but it was one that only finished 1-0. Two quick goals after the break and some well-organised, proactive defending helped Saudi Arabia to a famous win, leaving Argentina’s place in the knockout stages in question with Mexico and Poland yet to come.
