Speaking after Belgium’s opening 1-0 win over Canada at the World Cup last night, Belgium and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, while being presented with the game’s MVP award, said he didn’t deserve the prize, explaining:
“I don’t think I had a good game. I don’t know why I’ve won this trophy. Maybe because of my name and my reputation… We got the points, that’s all the counts, but we have to be realistic. We have to do better, me included.”
Belgium were fortunate to take all three points against a positive Canada side who had 21 shots on goal to Belgium’s nine in their first World Cup appearance since 1986. Next up in Qatar for Belgium is a meeting with Morocco on Sunday.
