‘Gracia was really impressive when he spoke to Leeds’

Javi Gracia has arrived at Elland Road today with the deal to become the new Leeds United manager “progressing very quickly,” according to Sky Sports News senior reporter Tim Thornton.

Tim Thornton on Gracia:

“Javi Gracia has arrived at Elland Road this morning. This is progressing very quickly.

“Leeds first spoke to him two weeks ago. The club made a shortlist of targets. When it was clear those were unavailable mid-season, they’ve moved quickly for Gracia.

“He’s one of eight candidates Leeds interviewed.”

The former Watford manager recently worked in Qatar where he managed Al Sadd SC for 22 games before departing last June.

The 52-year-old guided Watford to an FA Cup final during his time in England.

In the league under the Spaniards stewardship, the Hornets finished 11th with 50 points, both club records for the Premier League era.

Tim Thornton:

“I’m told Gracia was really impressive when he spoke to Leeds. He had detailed video analysis of some of the fixtures and he’s really done his research.

“Leeds believe he’s got a track record after keeping Watford in the Premier League in a very similar situation. Unlike some of Leeds’ other targets, he is available.

“The plan is to try and get this done as quickly as possible. Leeds are hoping to get him out on the grass as quickly as they can ahead of a crucial game this weekend against Southampton.”

Leeds United currently sit one point above Southampton in 20th.

The Yorkshire club’s last league win came in a dramatic 4-3 victory against Bournemouth at Elland Road back in November.
