Gareth Southgate after draw v USA: “I knew it would be difficult”

England were held to a goalless draw against USA after a lacklustre display. The match had very few openings for both teams but USA certainly came closest to breaking the deadlock after Christian Pulisic struck the bar in the first half.

Southgate, while speaking to ITV, stated: “Exactly the sort of game I thought it would be – it was really tough against a good opponent who were very athletic.

“I knew it would be difficult for us after such a high to replicate that sort of performance [against Iran]. I’m really pleased with how the players have applied themselves”.

Despite an underwhelming performance, England can be comfortable in the knowledge that only a 4-0 defeat to Wales would see them fail to qualify from the group. For Wales, Tuesday’s game is a must win after they were dealt a major blow to their World cup dreams by losing 2-0 to Iran.
