As quoted by A Bola, speaking on Portuguese television after his Portugal side’s 2-0 win over Uruguay in Qatar, coach Fernando Santos suggested that the Uruguayans tried to intimidate his team, saying:
“They started the game very aggressively, I think they wanted to scare us, but the team reacted very well, with great calmness. Then, after half an hour, contrary to what happened against Ghana, we took a step back, keeping the ball largely at the back… So at halftime, I told the players that we had to pick up our game and go forward, and that’s what we did.”
Portugal are now sure of a place in the last 16 and will win Group H should they draw their final group game with South Korea on Friday.
