Speaking after Uruguay’s loss to Portugal in Group H, Valencia and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani, frustrated by the 2-0 defeat, pointedly told reporters to speak to the coach about why his team were beaten. Cavani said:
“Ask Alonso [Diego, Uruguay coach] he’s the right person to talk about these more tactical aspects. It’s football, sometimes things work out, sometimes they don’t. He’s preparing for the next game… Defeat leaves a bitter taste, we know that we have great potential to produce more. It’s always hard to lose points in a World Cup, it’s always complicated, but we have to recover, correct what needs to be corrected and play the last game like a final. We have an opportunity to take the next step.”
Uruguay now must beat Ghana in their last group game to stand any chance of making the last 16 in Qatar.
