In speaking on the eve of the World Cup’s opening game in Qatar tomorrow night, Denmark striker Martin Braithwaite has stated that his team are candidates to win the tournament in the Middle East this winter. The now 31-year-old former Toulouse and Barcelona attacker explained:
“We are very confident. We have already managed to do things well in the Nations League. We know that people do not see us as favourites to win the World Cup, but of course we are candidates. We are here to win, not just to participate.”
Denmark will face France, Tunisia and Australia in Group D, having also been drawn with France and the Socceroos four years ago for the 2018 tournament. Denmark made the semi-finals of the European championships last summer and performed well against France in the Nations League this season, beating Les Bleus 2-0 in Copenhagen and 2-1 in Paris before narrowly missing out on topping the group.
