Speaking in a press conference on Monday, Zenit St Petersburg and Croatian international central defender Dejan Lovren made the case that Russia should have been allowed to participate at the 2022 World Cup currently ongoing in Qatar.
Lovren, who formerly played for Lyon, Liverpool and Southampton, is also the captain of Russian 1st division side Zenit.
“I am angry that Russia is not at the World Cup. I have always said that sport and politics should be separate. Even though it is the case [that Russia invaded Ukraine], Russia should have been authorised to play at the World Cup in any case.”
