Manchester United have announced that 37-year-old Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Premier League club. Ronaldo’s contract has been terminated with immediate effect. A club statement explained:
‘Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future. Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.’
Ronaldo’s future has been in doubt over recent days after he gave an explosive interview to Piers Morgan, heavily criticising the club and United coach Erik Ten Hag following a fluctuating season, form and minutes-wise, for the former Ballon d’or winner. Ronaldo is part of Portugal’s squad to face South Korea, Uruguay and Ghana at the World Cup, as part of Group H.
