Speaking in the wake of El Tri’s World Cup elimination this week, Club América and Mexico forward Henry Martín explained that his team would not shy away from criticism having seen their nation’s streak of making the last 16 at World Cups broken in Qatar. The 30-year-old said:
“The word failure is harsh, but it is what it is. We’re not going to hide, at least I’m not going to hide – we did not achieve what we had set out to do or the objectives that we set ourselves.”
A 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia in their last group game wasn’t enough to see Mexico through, going out on goal difference to Poland following a 0-0 draw between the teams and a 2-0 loss to Argentina. Martín is scheduled to return to club action with América on January 7th against Querétaro.
