Chelsea not in need of selling this month to comply with PSR

As reported by Sky Sports, Chelsea will not need to sell players this month to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

PSR allows clubs to accumulate maximum losses of up to £105 million over a three-year period, or £35m per season, on a rolling basis.

Crucially, the end of each financial year occurs on June 30, therefore the initial belief was that The Blues would need to make sales before that date in order to stay in line with PSR limits for the three-year period ending in the 2023/24 season.

During that period, Chelsea have so far reported pre-tax losses of £121m and £90.1m in 2021/22 and 2022/23 respectively. Though, these losses do not include potential deductions the London club could make for spending on areas such as their women’s team, academy, and infrastructure – all of which do not count towards PSR calculations.

However, Sky Sports now report that Chelsea are insisting they are set to comply with this year’s PSR limits, and do are consequently under no pressure to sell this month. Rather, they need to sell players to keep in line with PSR for the period ending in the 2023/24 season, the deadline for which is June 30 next year.

This could make the sale of academy graduate Conor Gallagher less likely. The 24-year-old has been rumored as one of the key names Chelsea would look to sell in need of funds before June 30, as reports suggest they’d be looking for at least £50m for Gallagher.

As such, with no rush to sell, Enzo Maresca’s new side may be able to hold out for their preferred fee or even keep the midfielder, who contributed to 16 goals (seven goals and nine assists) in 50 games across all competitions for the Stamford Bridge club this season.

Furthermore, with interest from Premier League rivals Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as Gallagher’s inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s final Euro 2024 squad, the players’ market value could rise even further over the summer.
