Speaking to Australian television following his team’s narrow 2-1 last 16 exit to Argentina at the World Cup, an emotional Jackson Irvine fought back tears. The former Celtic midfielder who now plays for St. Pauli in Germany said: “It’s difficult to comprehend everything at the moment, it’s all quite raw. But, yeah… I hope we made everyone proud…” before exiting the interview visibly upset.
Irvine was party to a stirring Socceroos display against one of the pre-tournament favourites which saw his team compete with one the international game’s strongest forces for long periods of the match. Having reduced the deficit to 2-1, the Socceroos came close to equalising in the final seconds of injury time via substitute Garang Kuol, who saw his close range effort brilliantly saved by Emiliano Martínez.
