Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has played down his team’s chances of winning the World Cup after a much-improved display during the 2-0 win over Poland that saw La Albiceleste top Group C, Scaloni insisted:
“We’re not candidates for anything, or favourites for anything – we’re going to fight. It’s totally wrong to think that we’re going to be champions because we won today. We played a good game, it was an important win but nothing more. It wasn’t easy, we had to play and win against a team well worth their two results that saw them qualify in the end. We interpreted the game correctly and the players played a complete game.”
Argentina now face Australia in the last 16 in Qatar on Saturday, just 70 hours after the final whistle at the end of the game with Poland and Scaloni reaffirmed his position that “all 26 players have a chance to play” against the Socceroos.
