Ángel Di María close to shock Benfica return

Thirteen years since his last game in the Estádio da Luz, Fabrizio Romano has reported that World Cup winner, Ángel Di Maria (35), is close to a shock return to Benfica.

Romano states that negotiations for the Argentine have reached their final stages with a contract until June 2024 all but ready to be signed.

With Di Maria’s Juventus contract set to expire on June 30th, the right winger has been said to be keen on a move out of Turin. A turbulent season with the Bianconeri has disappointed but and a potential swan song at Benfica to close off Di María’s career could now be in the offing.

Di María famously made his start in European football at the Lisbon club, scoring 15 goals and adding 28 assists in 121 appearances for the Encarnados. His form earned him a move to Real Madrid in 2010. However, since leaving Benfica, the Argentine has made it clear that his love for the club has never tarnished.

“Benfica were very important for me and my family. Coming to Europe was a really big step, and Benfica, which is such a big club, gave me everything.  It was like my first home and it gave me so much to keep on winning and to be who I am today,” said Di María in a 2020 UEFA interview.
